Irish pianist–composer Denis Carey is originally from Newport, County Tipperary, a town whose

lively musical culture helped shape the distinctive voice he has brought to concert halls across the

world. A voice nurtured by local sessions, classical piano tuition and a broad range of influences. The

resulting synthesis underpins a style that is unmistakably Irish yet refreshingly contemporary

As the current owner and director of the Peter Dee Academy of Music in Limerick since 1997,

Denis has brought his excellence in music to future generations. Established in 1972 on O’Connell

Avenue, the Academy has long served as a place of inspiration to people young and old with an

ambition to study music.

He has shared stages and studios with leading ensembles including Symphony Nova Scotia, the

Scottish National Orchestra, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra

and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, appearing both as featured soloist and arranger. These

collaborations have broadened the palette of Irish piano music and introduced international

audiences to the genre.

Carey’s compositional portfolio boasts several high-profile public commissions. An Turas (North

Tipperary County Council) celebrates the landscapes and folklore of his home county; The Charter

Suite (Limerick 800) honours the city’s medieval charter; and Style (Shannon Heritage) provided a

dynamic soundtrack for a touring dance production. Further afield, he co-wrote the score for the

Canadian feature film The Divine Ryans, starring Pete Postlethwaite and Robert Joy.

Over the past decade he has partnered with renowned lyricist Brendan Graham (You Raise Me Up)

on a fresh cycle of songs. Two titles—“The Coast of Labrador” and “You Take Me There”—were

recorded by Seán Keane and continue to receive regular airplay. RTÉ frequently selects Carey’s

pieces to underscore documentaries and episodes of Nationwide, testament to their evocative quality

and broad appeal. Several of his compositions were performed at the National Concert Hall along

with the RTE Concert Orchestra and a host of performers including Seán Keane, Eimear Quinn and

Cathy Jordan.

Denis’ discography comprises of An Turas (1999), Moving On (2009), Beyond The Horizon (2020)

and a forthcoming release Introspection produced by the renowned cellist and arranger, Neil Martin which is due

for release in late 2026 .

In 2011 Denis published his first collection of compositions, more than seventy original airs,

waltzes, reels, jigs, hornpipes and barn dances, together with full orchestral scores, ensuring his

music remains accessible to performers, educators and listeners alike.

Most recently Denis has stepped back into film work, scoring 3 short films, including two bursary

shorts funded by Tipperary and Laois county council. 2026 and 2027 will see him tour Introspection nationally and internationally.
